  • Shared Network Server Workflow?

Hello Apple Support people! We have a network media server (an EditShare). It’s a 16+ TB RAID server. All of the editing-related computers are connected to it through gigabit ethernet. On it we’re currently storing all our digitized media on it. Our editors have their own project files on their computer’s desktops.

We recently upgraded a good portion of the editing computers, and at the same time figure it’s a good time to rejuvenate our workflow process.

    A few key things:
    1) We need to overcome is that if one editor wants to give particular browser clips to another editor, we currently just open up both editor’s project files, and copy/paste clips from one project to the other. Unfortunately this is turning them into independent clips which is what we DON’T want.
    2) We’d like to have a smooth process by which the assistant editors exchange new digitized clips/media to the editors, and a process by which the editors can exchange sequences amongst themselves.

Any information/resources that you could provide or point in our direction would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask if you’d like further details. If you’d be open to talking directly to our editors that would also be much appreciated. Note: office located in Toronto, Ontario :). Please post here, but if you wish to send contact info privately, can e-mail me at ph*********@***oo.ca

    Thanks!

    Phil,

One of the problems with “Editshare” is that it is a “Volume Based” solution. You may want to investigate Apple’s “X-SAN” for a much more flexible “file based” workflow. Go to the Apple site and do a search. They have plenty of info about it.

I can go on and on about a shared storage environment, but it’s MUCH more complicated and detailed than you can ever get with a simple posting. I would suggest that you find and hire an experienced “Workflow” consultant to help you out.

Here’s a thought to leave you with. With X-SAN, the “SAN” is the project. The actual project is insignificant. You organize you media independent of any project, so therefore, EVERY project can easilly access the same medial. With some simple “rules” about naming and file structure you can easily have a hundred people working on multiple projects sharing the same media.

    Good luck.
