January 7, 2006 at 9:48 pm[tom adams] “here’s the scenario: one large still (300dpi scanned) image has been cropped & edges feathered over another image.”
300 DPI is way overkill. Suggest you optimize your scans at 72 DPI before importing into FCP. If you need to scale the image up, just make sure the frame size can handle it.
By not optimizing images properly, all kinds of anomalies can take place.
And Kurt, please don’t take my list personally, just trying to help out. Many people (wrongly) don’t use a monitor, nor do they pay special attention to the RT Pop Up menu nor the Sequence>Render bars – both of which are crucial to image quality for rendered fx. Glad to have a vet like you aboard. 😉

thanks for the replies but i think you could use a few tips on choosing your words of advice and not assuming anything. Many people wrongly assume the skill level of the people they’re replying to.
By stating “Many people (wrongly) don’t use a monitor, nor do they pay special attention to the RT Pop Up menu nor the Sequence>Render bars – both of which are crucial to image quality for rendered fx” ..it sounds as if you’re implying that I was one of those people. I wasn’t. I read the manual. I watch the DVDs. I tested things first. I did research online. I did a search in this forum. It’s not helpful to anyone ffor you to assume anything…
(and by the way, with over ten years of editing under my belt, I wouldn’t exactly call myself a veteran, but I’m not a novice either.)3oo dpi is NOT way overkill. This documentary that I’m working on calls for a lot of very tight close ups on historic faces and imagery, zooms, pans, pull-outs..etc. Almost every shot is a still image that needed to be scanned at a high resolution. …not sure what you mean when you say ” If you need to scale the image up, just make sure the frame size can handle it.” as far as advice goes,…that’s not very helpful because it’s very general, vague and not clear.
If I scanned everything in at 72dpi the whole project would look like crap and I would look like I don’t know what I’m doing.
Again, I appreciate all sources of assistance, I just don’t appreciate it when people assume things in a highly specialized (not to mention such a fantastic) forum like Creative Cow.
now that that’s off my chest…I hope you ‘re not offended…just needed to voice my thoughts. Thanks and take care.

January 8, 2006 at 10:39 pmHello Tom,
At times my tone gets misread on forums, and this is one of those times. My advice is usually spot on here and I think that many of the regulars can back me on that.[Tom Adams] “Again, I appreciate all sources of assistance, I just don’t appreciate it when people assume things in a highly specialized (not to mention such a fantastic) forum like Creative Cow.”
Certain assumptions are made due to the problems that you are having, you see, I can’t see your system (or your resume) from here. It is you who should not be upset by these assumptions. Every piece of “help” here makes certain assumptions. That has to happen.
[Tom Adams] “Many people wrongly assume the skill level of the people they’re replying to.”
Happens all the time….and it should not be a big deal.
[Tom Adams] “it sounds as if you’re implying that I was one of those people. “
Note that I did not point the finger directly at you – whatever it “sounded like” – I didn’t do that. I worded it as “MOST people” and do this often because it is really true. MOST people do not monitor correctly, and I’m sorry you took my “tone” the wrong way – I’m a long-time FCP instructor, wrote a book, etc. so my advice is from that POV. I do know what I am talking about and am sensitive to the common problems people make whatever their experience level is.
[Tom Adams] “3oo dpi is NOT way overkill. This documentary that I’m working on calls for a lot of very tight close ups on historic faces and imagery, zooms, pans, pull-outs..etc.”
About your graphics: Sure, you should scan at 300 DPI, but after doing so you should bring it into Photoshop and optimize it at 72 DPI (the target resolution of raster graphics) – with a frame size that is 2 or 3 times the native frame size of DV. How to? Just enter the new frame size and bit depth in the Image Size dialog box in Photoshop. I’m not just pulling this out of thin air, this is a known and documented technique in both the Avid and FCP training programs.
A 300 DPI image brought into FCP is interpolated as merely a larger frame size, not more bit depth. This can blow up your image much larger than it needs to be…overkill! By avoiding the step of image optimization for television, you are getting less performance, less RT and will tax your processors to higher levels. By not optimizing your images, sure it will work – it’s just not as efficient as doing things correctly.
Regarding Photoshop for video, and for further research you might try reading some of the articles on kenstone.net, read Richard Harrington’s book on Photoshop for video, any of Tom Wolsky’s books or check out Ch. 14 of my book.
Good luck to you and sorry if we misunderstood each other.
