  • Shadows missing in AE 2021

I was working with a light in one comp and I was able to the shadow cast on the layer I want it being cast on. Then I moved the casting layer slightly above so it would not be cut by the receiving layer and the shadow is gone.

I deleted the light and created a new one, made sure that cast shadows is enabled for both the light and the casting object, and accepts shadows is also enabled for the receiving layer. I looked at separate views and both the casting and receiving layers are close together as well as the light, which has the falloff set to none. The shadow still refuses to show.

I quit and restarted AE and didn’t help either.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

There are a few things that break 3D space / intersections / shadow-casting in Ae. Are any of these your culprit?

    • 2D layers between 3D layers

    • Adjustment layers

    • A 3D precomposition layer without collapsed transformations

    • A 3D precomposition layer to which an effect, closed mask (with mask mode other than None), or track matte has been applied

    • A 3D layer with a layer style applied

Additionally, I think shadows are always turned off in Draft 3D mode.

    Thanks Walter,

None of that is happening on my comp. And on the AE 2021 Draft 3D is off by default. If I turn it on then everything looks all wonky.

Can you post a simplified AEP so we can take a look?
