Whenever I convert MTS (AVCHD) files to Cineform .avi intermediaries via Cineform NeoScene, I usually get a few stray .sfk files (say, 3 or 4 .sfk’s out of 17 MTS files converted). I looked them up, and .sfk is supposed to be a Sound Forge peaK file.

The .sfk’s do not appear to be hurting anything, but I am curious as to why they would be showing up. Does anyone know?

I learned in another thread the importance of sticking with Intel-standard motherboards and Intel-approved RAM, so in the future I will go that way. However, in contrast, I have a Dell T3400 with some low-latency Crucial Ballistix DDR-2, and the paging file turned down to minimum (16MB). Is it possible that the low-latency RAM is causing the NeoScene converter to generate extra files?

Dell tells me I am unable to edit the BIOS for RAM.

    Thank you.

SFK files are the picture of the audio (the waveform) that you see on the timeline when you edit. Vegas generates them when a media file is added to a project. You can safely delete them and Vegas will regenerate them as needed, but they are small, so I’d just ignore them.

I can’t even imaging how RAM latency would ever generate a file. As far as sticking with this or that parts, I’m not going to argue with experts, but I usually check out what’s on sale for RAM, do a little research to make sure it’s not in some crazy batch of duds (which there is a bunch of RAM modules in the tech news recently) and buy whatever. If you aren’t overclocking or pushing the voltage, mid-range name-brand on-sale RAM is fine, unless you have some finicky motherboard.

Thanks, D. I’ll probably just delete them and not worry about it, as they are not causing any problems. I was just curious to know what might be causing Cineform to generate the files.

    Hi D.

I’m just curious: Does a Dell count as a finicky motherboard?

    Or, not so much?

I would never buy from Dell again because Dell has manufacturers built parts with lower specs just for them and then sells them as the real thing. That’s how they get their prices so low. Dell counts as a cheap motherboard. If you don’t want to build you own, get a Lenovo or HP Workstation (not desktop line) or one from a boutique builder that uses industry standard parts.

I wonder if that’s why Boris RED never did work on my laptop. Maybe the NVidia card is missing components?

But what does one do for a quality laptop, with a true metal housing? Who makes the best laptops?

    Thanks.

IMHO… Lenovo does. They bought the IBM Thinkpad line from IBM and the IBM Thinkpad is the “gold standard” of laptops. They are build solid. I have a Z61m, my wife has a T61 and my kids have the S10 NetBooks. All great laptops.

    How do they handle heat?

Can they be used for video editing, if one has, say, a G-Raid for D: or E:, to handle data? Or do they still get too hot?

My Lenovo z61m has a fan and vents on the side and doesn’t get that hot at all. It has a firewire port so i use external firewire drives with it for video editing. I don’t do long renders with it. I use my QuadCore desktop for that so I don’t know how hot it would get during a multi-hour render.
