  • Setting up a Mac Pro for CS5/6 usage…

Posted by Seth Chambers on July 10, 2012 at 7:15 pm

I am setting up a Mac Pro for use as an editing station. I am using Adobe CS5/6 as my primary NLE environment, with a Nvidia Qudro FX 4000 to take advantage of Mercury/CUDA. I will be editing in a two monitor workspace. However, I also need to be able to send out to client preview (Composite/Component RCA as well as SDI video and audio would be nice).

Would it be best to use a SECOND Quadro 4000 to drive client preview (convert from its DVI port?)… If so, are there any issues with audio latency by pairing system audio with a dedicated video card?

    OR…

Would it be best to use a 3rd Party OUTPUT (KONA, BlackMagic, MAtrox, etc). If so, which module is best suited for use with the Adobe suite?

Thank you in advance for all your help!!

You want a video card from AJA or BMD or Matrox

Go for the Kona LHi, it has all the things you need. Got one myself, works like a charme with CS6. If you need 4K capabilities Kona3G is a good option. When you plan to patch the signals a lot you might want to consider the optional breakout box, comes in handy.

What kind of video card you recommend (except quadro series) for working with Premiere and After Effectes CS6 on Mac?
I didn’t want to create new post, so asked here.

    Thank’s for answers.

Dovydas, you’re talking about a Computer grfx card.
The post is about I/O Video Cards, Video Compliant signal to feed an external video monitor, a broadcast monitor with a proper signal.

Sorry, I don’t know what to recommend for a computer grfx card.
Look up what Adobe approves/suggest and see what will fit in your machine.

Chris, thanks for your response. I have already purchased BMD Multibridge (which actually doesn’t work well with Pr), so I/O card isn’t a problem. The question is, which one of Nvidia GTX series is optimal for work with Pr and Ae. Is 480 GTX series enough, o it’s worth investing in 570 or 580 series?

    Thanks.

I have seen this link. There is no possibility to make GTX 570 to work properly with Pr on MAC OS? Only GTX 285?

here is a thread on the cow forum explaining how to do it:

I however am not recommending this, if you like a good fast GPU go for the quadro 4000 as that is supported by both Apple and Adobe.

How did my thread get hijacked? 🙁 I feel so dirty…

On my original question, I did decide to go with the KONA LHi. I will report on setup next week when it arrives.

On the hijacked thread, you have two options Quadro 4000 and 4500. I have a classroom full of machines with Quadro 4000’s in them, and they are worth EVERY penny in CS5/6 (IMO). I no longer have to RAM preview most shots, I am able to play multiple streams simultaneously with no rendering or slowdown. I have become a HUGE fan of CUDA/Mercury.

    THanks for the help, btw.
