  • Setting up a Fibre connection…

So, I am beginning to price out and design a Fibre solution for a small post operation. Here are the parameters:

-We have a GB Labs raided SAN drive (https://www.gblabs.co.uk/products/Space/)with roughly 20 TB of usable storage. This is connected to 10 MacPro seats via 100 mb/s ethernet (cringe!). This drive is used to house materials (mostly ProRes422 mov’s) that are versioned for broadcast.

-There is a very limited budget to expand the storage (roughly 40K). The thought was to add a 120 TB Chesapeake Drive (https://www.chesa.com/professional-video) as an archive with a Fibre connection to the 20 TB GB labs where they can be accessed by the editors. (we cannot upgrade all seats to fibre is the issue)

-This fibre connection would be used to transfer the Prores files quickly from the Chesapeake archive to our editing space SAN. It would be managed from a MacPro that would have a fibrecard and access to all drives via a fibre switch.

I guess, my questions are “Am I crazy?”, “Can this work?” and “Has anyone ever attempted such madness?”. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

As time goes on, and as I get older, I am getting sick of posts like these. GB Labs is a great company. They make the Space EX which is the correct product for your company. You do not have a “small” post operation. You have TEN EMPLOYEES at least – you said that you have 10 users, with 10 Mac ocmputers. This means that you have more employees and more money than almost everyone who reads Creative Cow. While I can recommend alternate solutions, GB Labs is a great company, and all you need is to have your boss/owner to stop thinking about his NEXT FAMILY VACATION, and invest correctly into his company that is obviously expanding and doing well (since you need more storage capacity). Buy the correct product (the Space EX for your existing system), and every thing will work wonderfully.
And you know what, maybe he won’t be able to buy his college daughter a new BMW for her first new car – and that SUITS ME JUST FINE.
