  • Setting Proper Tone Levels in Premier – SMPTE RP155

Posted by Doug Broomfield on July 17, 2007 at 10:08 pm

We are required to meet SMPTE RP155 specs for our audio tone in order to meet digital audio broadcast requirements. Can anyone tell me exactly what that means and where we set our tone levels with bars in Premiere.
    Is it -20db or what?

Need answer end of today 7/17 please. Thanks so much!

    Thanks

Searching on SMPTE RP155 on Google got me to an interesting document that states one value in Europe and a different in the US.

Search the following doc for SMPTE RP155 and you’ll see.

    LOUDNESS CONTROL IN DIGITAL BROADCAST

Ok, so I’m a day late but here is your answer.

PPro’s default level for tone is -12dBfs so if you adjust the tone clip’s level to -8db it will output at the -20dBfs that RP155 specifies.

    Hope this helps.
