Setting pan adjustments on multiple clips?
Posted by Jason Brown on October 26, 2006 at 1:39 pmHey All,
I have a voiceover bin with 14 clips in it, and want them all to be mid-pan. Is the best way to lay them all in my timeline and then do the pan “apply pan to in-out”? Or is there a way to apply a pan setting to multiple clips in a bin?
I’m using AVID Media Composer v11.

October 26, 2006 at 2:09 pmUnfortunately you can’t set multiple pans at one time, at least not without laying them into the timeline and using Apply Global or Apply In to Out. This works, but if you’re going to be using them in various parts of your sequence it would be easier to adjust the pans before you start cutting.
Load a clip into your source monitor, then use your audio mixer to set the pan. Repeat with all 14 clips. This will set your pan on the master clip and not just in the timeline. It’s a pain to have to do this to each clip seperately, but it’s better than trying to remember to adjust them all in the timeline when you’re finished (especially if you have tracks you don’t want midpanned mixed in on the same audio track as those you do).
I’m pretty sure people have been asking on the Avid forums for the ability to set levels and pans on multiple clips in the bins. Would be a great feature to have!
Mike.

October 26, 2006 at 2:56 pmThanks Mike,
I had already done that, gone through each one and adjusted…I was just wondering if anyone here had any new ideas on how to do it differently.
I just learned yesterday what “filter automation gain” does…I couldn’t figure that out for a long time!
BTW, you were helping me with a 16:9 project…I’m going to give you a synopsis (a long one!) of my findings with that project. — check that post.

October 26, 2006 at 4:02 pmIn a perfect world:
each clip should have attributes, default pan and level and the option to remember and apply these sttings ala remember interpretion on ae! The option of showing track number on clip text would also be a help, spotting the track number in the mediafile name is too clumsy, since tracks can’t be attributed as odd or even you’re always in danger of flipping tracks around. I’m a pretty loyal Avid Editor but the audio tools really need updating, stereo?, ganging faders over midi, headroom adjust on import…..
