Setting audio levels
Posted by Ron Black on April 29, 2008 at 11:14 pmFirst, you guys/gals are great and have been exceptionally helpful. Let me ask you: I just got a call from a TV station that airs our show and they asked if we could set the maximum audio output to a maximum of -8. Is there a way to set the max output levels?
Thanks!

April 30, 2008 at 2:03 amMaybe I need to explain. After I’m done editing, I render as an avi and give it to our closed captioning guy who puts it on a DVC pro tape. My question is whether there is a way to set parameters?

April 30, 2008 at 3:29 amRight click on the wav and under switches slelct normalize. Then set the normalize limit to -8. Play the track and the master meter will now show the peak level was -8. Danny

April 30, 2008 at 3:53 amFor broadcast where you really need to be able to deliver reapeatable results time and time again I find there are two tools I cannot live without. I think DSE may say the same. They are audio plugins from the ‘Waves’ collection and they are the L1 Ultramaximiser (comprises the L1 Ultramaximiser and L1 Ultramaximiser +) and the C1 Parametric Compander. There are a host of good audio plugs out there but these two have almost become the standard as they are extremely good at what they do. Not cheap but but once you have learnt how to use them they will enable you to deliver broadcast quality audio levels consistantly. DSE might be able to suggest some others as audio is a big thing with him.

April 30, 2008 at 4:49 amI’ve actually pretty much quit using WAVES. GREAT products. Super-sh** service since they closed their US offices and moved everything to Israel, IMO. I can’t get my dongles to work on any system any longer. Can’t say enough bad about where WAVES is today. they don’t respond to phone calls nor emails. I was in Tel Aviv recently, and couldn’t even arrange for a quick visit to their offices.
iZotope’s Ozone however…is a great replacement, it’s affordable, sexy and fun to open in front of a client, US-supported with real people on the phone that are actually in Mass…Just bought their new noise redux tool as well.
We’ve been licensing the iZotope products for VASST software for a few years now, but I kept using WAVES out of habit, and Ozone was the “other” go-to tool. WAVES isn’t even installed on my primary editing machine, and with my new laptopDouglas Spotted Eagle

April 30, 2008 at 6:17 amGeez! Sad to hear that DSE. Yes I know what you you mean ‘out of habit’, ‘cos of that I am still a big Waves user. Guess I should drag myself to look at some of iZotope’s plugs sometime.
Cheers
