setting a farm
Hello there!
Well this is my first post after reading yours for long, big thanks for everything i’ve found here, which is a lot!Trying to put all my macs together for AE render and compressor purposes.
Got two macpros (4 cores each, 5gb Ram to share) also a powerbook g4 and an old imac g3.
also some fw800 lacies
Been reading a lot about it, can´t find the answer…
Both macpros will join at a gigabyte network,the one i’ll be working on being the client. th other running macosxserver
qmaster´s then supossed to do the compressor job, as for AE, seems more complicated get the most out of the equipment..
should it be qmaster as well, how does it works with AE? any alternatives?
watch folder appears to be quite primitive… did I misjudge it?
may the older computers help somehow?
should i get more ram?what would you do?

The most user-friendly and cost-efficient render farm setup (in my experience and research, anyway) would be Smedge render management software, however the Mac version is not out yet. Since you’re bound to using macs, you probably have no choice but to use the watch folder method for now.
I should add that render management software (like Smedge) is ideal in your type of situation, where a wide variety of machine configurations, speeds etc. will be thrown into the mix. Most other methods tend to run into problems with such a diverse set of gear handling your renders.
