  • Set in-point on a layer or composition already added to a comp

Posted by Ter Ber on March 28, 2023 at 5:24 pm

Sometimes the layer or pre-composition is very long and I need to find a specific time to be an in-point and move that in-point to the time cursor or start in the current composition.

I have always been able to do this, but always with a lot of time consuming tweaking.

Any Mandalorians out there that can tell me “this is the way“?

PS Not from the project window or layer viewer before it adding it to the timeline, but by selecting the layer or comp in the timeline and change/set the in-point and move the layer or comp to the current-time-indicator or start in the current comp. If I can put the numbers in by keyboard to set the in-point that would be great.

You can do this with shortcuts, will that be enough?

You can use “[” and “]” to move a layer based on it’s in-point or out-point. When pressing these keys it will move the layer/pre-comp to the current time.

You can use “Alt + [” or “Alt + ]” to trim the layer/comp to where ever the time indicator is.

So if you want your layers in-point to start at 10seconds you can go to that time click “Alt + [“. Then click the “Home” button on your keyboard which will move the time indicator to the beginning of the comp. Use “[” to now move the layers in-point to the beginning of the comp.

    Thanks Chris,
You are very helpful! I never took the time before, but now I have set up my keyboard short cuts correctly for this. Scandinavian keyboards have hidden the square brackets on the ALT(gr)+number 8 and 9 keys so bracket short cuts have always been a bit tricky to use. I’ve set up a custom short cut, thanks to you. Works perfectly!

    ….This is the way👍
