  • Set effects duration for every layer

Posted by Quang Huy on March 7, 2017 at 6:55 am

    Hi everyone!
I have to add Gaussian Blur effect to the beginning of every single layer in the timeline. How can i set duration of the effect exactly 3 seconds for every layer?
I tried to create a preset with keyframes, but it does not work exactly for every layer.

    Thanks for reading!

Use an adjustment layer for the blur. It will affect every layer under it.

    Thank you Tero Ahlfors!

Can you guide me in detail please?
I tried to do but the duration of effects was not exact.

I tried adjustment layer but it seems unable to set effects duration to every single layer.

Add adjustment layer above all clips in sequence….

Add blur to adjustment layer….blur is controlled here.

you don’t need blur on layers beneath it.

I got it, but i want Blur effect at only 3 first seconds of every clip, not whole clip.
    How to do it sir?

I tried with keyframes before but it didn’t work correctly, the effects duration is not exactly 3 seconds for some clips.
T got stuck there for days. Please help!!!

    Thanks Dave!
But i think there’s no problems with my project, i removed attributes.
The position of keyframe is scaled with the length of the clip. I dont know how to remove that scale.

I want to add a 3 secs blur effect at the beginning of every single clip (i have hundreds clips). How can i do that in the fast way?

    ok…

    so you have sequential clips:

    CLIP 1, CLIP 2, CLIP 3

on each clip you want 3 sec blur?

    Yes sir!
I have too many clips and i want 3 sec blur at the beginning of each clip. I had to create keyframe manually for each clip before 🙁

I think you’re confusing terminology which is leading to some misunderstanding on everyone else’s part. Reading through the thread I think I know what you’re trying to do. Let’s see if I’ve got this straight:

You have a series of edits on your timeline (which I think you’ve also referred to as layers probably because you’ve checker-boarded your edits on multiple video layers). You want each edit (or shot, or clip) to start with a 3 second Gaussian Blur that you will keyframe in some fashion (probably fading it off). You have many edits (hundreds as you say). Is this correct?

If so, the first answer regarding the use of an adjustment layer is correct. Here are the steps to use to make the effect for each edit.
    1. Create a new video layer that has no other video clips on it.
    2. Create an adjustment layer and place it on the new video layer.
    3. Adjust the length of the adjustment layer so that it is 3 seconds long.
    4. Add the Gaussian blur to this adjustment layer and add the keyframes you want to it.
    5. If you have audio on your timeline, make sure you de-select all the audio tracks (if they’re active, they’ll be colored blue, if not active, they’ll be gray).
    6. Make sure you have Snap turned on (it’s the u shaped magnet on the time line just below the timecode)
    7. Place the adjustment layer with the effect at the start of the first video clip you want to effect.
    8. Select the adjustment layer clip with the Arrow tool and hold down the Option key (Alt key on Windows) and drag to til your cursor snaps to the next edit point. This will create a copy of the adjustment layer and place it over your next video clip.
    9. Repeat step 8 until finished.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Jamie!
You understood exactly my problem and helped me too much. Thank you very much!!
But i have like 30 clips in my timeline, so have i repeat step (8) 30 times? I wonder if there is a fast way with Presets or something…?
