    I really hope somebody can help me….

    I have been filming on my Canon XHA1 in SD 16:9 PAL (I went down from HDV because of the codec problems with QT7).

    It captured and edited in FC6 fine, absolutely no problem, all looked nice in widescreen. But when I export it, it changes to 4:3. I have solved this initially by dragging it into QT and exporting it from there as widescreen.

    Only problem is, when I bring it into sorenson squeeze or any other software to convert it to a wmv or flv it goes back to 4:3 again. Even when i import the quicktime file back into FC it does the same thing. I have tried altering the sequence settings but i just get the same when i export it.

    Any ideas? I need to solve this problem by the end of the week so any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance….!!!!

    16×9 Sd material is known as anamorphic. Anamorphic is 16×9 material squeezed in to a 4×3 window as SD is only 4×3.

    no panic, simple explanation:

    when you’re in SD, there’s often a way of working in 16×9 that’s called anamorphic. SD can’t be anything but 4:3, so to squeeze all that horizontal resolution out they simply squish your image into that 4:3 box. The computer or TV needs to know that it’s squished (anamorphic) and automatically stretches it out to a letterbox presentation.

    So in Sorenson you need to tell it that this needs to be unsquished and played as 16×9. Instead of 320×240, you’ll end up with 320×180 (or something to that effect.) Also when brining footage like this into FCP, there’s a box called “anamorphic” in your bins that you need to check. Then FCP will know what to do!

    Thanks for replying so quickly,

    the problem on the other thread seems to be the other way round to mine, but I do understand it a little better.

    from capture to export, i checked every anamorphic option – or so I thought. do you think i am having this problem because i might have missed one out?

    maybe if i export as hd 16:9, the aspect ratio would stick?

    thank you, sounds very basic when you explain it like that!

    only problem is, there doesnt seem to be a way of marking it anamorphic in sorenson!? I don’t suppose you know how?

    Your footage is anamorphic, no? Or is it already letterboxed? If it’s 16×9 squeezed in to a 4×3 aspect, then it is just the same as the other thread.

    You need to put a 16×9 pixel count in sorenson and it will stretch your footage approproately.

    16×9 pixel counts are 640×360, or 480×270 or 320×180. You need to modify your settings to match those (they have a constrain aspect ratio option to help you as well).

    Sorry I don’t have Squeeze in front of me at the moment, but I believe there’s a place to set aspect ratio at the top of the main window. It defaults to 4:3, but you can set it to 16:9 up there. I think this is the only place you specify your source as anamorphic. As others said, your output will be 16:9 with square pixels, such as 640×360 or 320×180.
