Does anyone know how to use expresso to animate objects sequentially? In this case, the rotation on a joint chain, and in this example, I’m trying to animate the joints so that they rotate one at a time without using keyframes (much).

The first joint would rotate from 110 degrees to 0 degrees, then the second, then the third, and so on, so that the chain rolls out flat across a surface, like wallpaper. It occurred to me that a step effector might be useful, but I don’t know how to get it to apply to a joint chain.

That tutorial rules, and in fact it was my starting point for this. Unfortunately, in that example, each of the joints rotates based on the current rotation of the one immediately above it, and I just don’t understand Xpresso well enough to figure out how to modify it to make it go one joint at a time.

But you’re right, that’s a really sweet tut.

Well that was a while ago but I didn’t have time, then got down a much too complex path (it’s been a while) and then explored a COFFEE node (also too complex) then had the file I was working on just go snakey yesterday so I restarted and this popped out today. Here are 5 files exploring, the first is close but if you move the rotation value too fast it doesn’t come out right, that’s fixed in the second one, then after that I try to move plane then go with a spline like in the Greyscale tute, then reverse the animation so it unrolls.

It’s kind of lumpy but I stuck with 120° for my tests (not for a good reason) but if MaxRot was lowered and the number of joints increased I think it could be quite nice. I’ll try that tomorrow.

For some reason the files I download seem to be unreadable… that might be on my end. But thank you so much for taking the time to do that, I really appreciate it. I just hope I can figure out why they won’t open (it downloads really fast… like suspiciously too fast. hmm.)

I’m working in R12 so if you aren’t you’d have to open the files in the demo and check them out there.
