  • Sequence settings not right, Black borders on video?

Posted by Dillan Cohen on April 19, 2011 at 4:02 am

    Hi!

I think I edited my project in the wrong sequence setting because theres these huge black horizontal lines on the top and bottom of my video, and the quality of video is noticeably worse then if it were put on a timeline with the right sequence settings. It was shot on a canon dslr and then converted to h.254 for editing
This is actually my first time ever posting on an internet forum but this is driving me nuts, I looked around and found out that whats probably happening is the sequence settings doesn’t match the clip settings and I saw a suggestion on here to open a new sequence and it will ask to adjust the setting automatically when I add a clip in, that seems to do the trick if I get the clip from the bin but if I take it from my original sequence and timeline where the completed project is, for some reason it is displayed really small on the canvas with the rest of the canvas in black, I’ve already edited my whole project so I need to know how I can get rid of the black borders and put it in the correct settings if thats the problem without having to re edit the whole thing

Any Help would be hugely appreciated!!!
    thanks,
    dillan

canon dslrs record in h.264, and h.264 is NOT an editing codec. You need to convert to a proper editing codec.

Do a search on the cow for editing h.264 and there will be plenty of info on what to convert it to.

    Hi Dillan,
Your questions, with all my respects, shows that you are absolutely lost.
Make your self a favor, and learn about your workflow before you get in more troubles.

Thanks for the response zane, looking back my post may have sounded a bit confusing and I’m certainly still learning but I mispoke when I said it was converted to h.264 I meant to say I converted it to apple pro res 422, I guess my main question would be is there a way to resize or reformat a whole timeline to its proper settings if its already laid in incorrectly??

Thanks for the video Rafeal, I watched it and it will surely come in handy in the future, I love being a filmmaker I’m just terrible at the tech stuff and am still learning, the videos great for what to do next time, and I know what I wrote is pretty confusing but I already edited the whole project and can’t start over, so basically is there any way to “change the sequnce settings to match the clip settings” for the whole timeline after the fact, I’ve tried to do it manualy in sequence settings but it just makes the clip really tiny

    Thanks for any input

If it makes things easier this is what it currently looks like:

This Is what it looks like in a sequence with the right settings direct from the bin:

and this is what I get when I try to fix the settings either by changing them in sequence settings or moving the clip to a sequence with the proper settings like the one above:

In the third example simply right click on the click and choose Remove Attributes and check both Basic Motion and Distort, then click okay.
