Sequence settings for iPhone 4

I haven’t used FCP in a long time and i’m looking for some advice / tips.
Using FCP 6.06 on a MacBook Pro (4gb RAM / 2.6Ghz Dual Core Processor)
1. I was wondering what sequence settings people would recommend when editing a short 5 min film for web based platforms using mixed media, most of which is shot on iPhone 4 (720p @ 24fps / H.264).
2. If the final output is likely to be less than 1280×720 (iPhone) is it possible to use a smaller frame size in the sequence settings (i.e. 720×480) so that i can PAN / SCAN footage without loss of quality?
3. If the timeline is likely to contain mixed media formats – what baring does this have on Sequence settings? Would it be better to conform everything to ProRes, example?
Any other advice would be much appreciated..

You cannot simply edit the MP4 material. First, you will need to transcode it to ProRes, as MP4 is not an editing codec in FCP.
Yes, you could edit in a ProRes seq set to SD pixel dimensions if you really think that repositioning trumps resolution.

Well, FCP happily accepts MP4 format without transcoding it’s just what might work better.
I don’t think i ever mentioned that i thought “repositioning trumps resolution”. From what i understand, if the output resolution is going to be smaller than 1280×720 then I wouldn’t lose quality by using a smaller frame size in the seq. settings and up scaling etc.
But does FCP just ‘shrink’ the image if i chose a smaller frame size with the same aspect ratio or is there something else happening? -

I’m one of nine FCP forum leaders on the Creative Cow, and I would not waste my time or yours telling you to transcode from MP4 to another format just for kicks. All you have to do is search the forum and you’ll find hundreds of posts all on the same subject and all in complete agreement.
I’m sorry I took the time out of my weekend to try to help you, do you’re on your own now. Go ahead and edit the MP4 video on any timeline you please and just wait to see what happens a few minutes into your edit or when you add effects or color correction. I only wish I could be there to see your face when you hit the wall.
