  • sequence settings for creating QT for playback on laptop to projector?

I have a friend who is editing a slideshow with video in FCP. His goal is to create a QuickTime file that he can play back on a MacBookPro in full screen mode, which will then be projected by a digital projector in a small theater. We are thinking to ultimately create a QT movie that is compressed in H.264 at 1920×1080 or 1440×900, since that is the resolution of the screen on the laptop. The projector will downscale to its own 1027×768. A sample movie we created seems to have the quality and playback that we want.

Since he is using a variety of still images and video i am wondering what are the best sequence settings to use in FCP. Obviously mixing formats in one timeline will require rendering of some sort. He does not have a special video card like a Kona…We want to preserve the integrity of everything along the way keeping in mind where he hope to end up – playing off a laptop for a projector.

What I have suggested is that he edit the still images in a DVCProHD1080i timeline, and edit the video in an HDV timeline, using the easy setups. this gives him as much realtime editing as possible along the way. When he is done creating these sections he can make a new DVCProHD 1080i timeline and drag and drop all of the sequences into this new one, and render out the H.264 final movie.

Is there anything I am not thinking of here that could be a stumbling block? What about the interlacing issue…will that affect things, or does the final render to H264 solve that…I am so used to the 1080i format that I dont so much else…

    Thx for any suggestion…
