Sequence settings, editing mode, & preview settings
I need to clear up some confusion, so let me know if I’ve got this right:
When beginning a new sequence, you should choose the sequence preset which matches your source footage. This is because there will be no mismatch of dimensions/frame rate. I’m not at my editing PC at the moment, so when you select a preset such as AVCHD, is the editing mode automatically set to AVCHD, or something else? So here’s my first bit of confusion: should I set the editing mode to the same format as my original footage (AVCHD), and if I change it to a different one from my source footage, would it make it slower somehow? And if so, why?
The next bit of confusion is in the preview settings. I understand that when viewing a preview, PPro has to render your footage if you’ve set it to a different frame rate/resolution (I think). However, what if you’ve selected a different codec/format, like h264? Does that mean PPro will not only have to render the footage to get it to the correct frame rate/resolution, but will also have to encode it to the new format for previews? This leads me to think that I should also leave this to AVCHD to prevent further encoding. I’ll take care of that in the final export settings.
So I’m thinking to have all of this matching to prevent further encoding which would speed up my time in PPro. I’m still a little unsure of how the editing mode works and how it relates to the preview settings since they seem like the same thing to me. Sequence settings – editing mode – preview settings – all those 3 things together seem like they’re the same.

If you just want PPro to open, it doesn’t matter what setting you choose. You can choose the proper sequence setting if you know you’re working with or want to to work with.
Once PPro is open you can create more sequences and the ‘settings’ dialogue will open again.
SEQUENCE CREATION SHORTCUT (It now works like AE!): in your project bin, drag your footage clip onto the ‘create new’ icon, next to the magnification icon and the new folder icon. Your sequence will be created based on the clip’s dimensions and codec.

In 5.5, you can just right-click a file (even in the Media Browser, where it’s a huge time-saver) to create a sequence based on its properties.
