    Hi all,
was wondering if avid MC has sequence nesting like fcp.

In fcp, I edit sequence 1, drag and drop it like a clip into sequence 2.

Then later if i want to make any changes to sequence 1, I make them in the sequence 1 tab, render and the changes automatically update in sequence 2.

Can I work like this in avid MC? If not exactly, what would the next best thing be; mix down sequence 1, load mixdown into source and overwrite into sequence 2. Then repeat whenever I make changes to sequence 1? or just go back to editing in FCP (which I really don’t want to do)?

any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    thanks,

Avid does not have anything like sequence nesting.

In six years of editing in Avid, I’ve never really needed it. You could do what you describe. Alternatively there’s the collapse tracks tool in Avid. You could collapse the source sequence and then edit it into the target sequence.

It doesn’t have the parenting that FCP’s nesting (usually) does.

The only reason I use nesting in FCP is for effects as we don’t have the ability to use effects in the same way as Avid where you can span an effect across many shots.

My problem with FCP’s nesting has been it’s inconsistency. If you have In/Out points marked in the source sequence when nesting, then it seems that the nested sequence no-longer holds it’s relationship to the original, but instead becomes a copy, but is only accessible by double-clicking the nest in the sequence you’ve nested it in.

thanks for the info Dylan. I tried the collapse tool this morning. Good to know about and would be perfect but it seems to only work on the video tracks.

I haven’t noticed the fcp source in and out marks causing the sequence to unlink yet. but that doesn’t sound like fun. I have noticed I have to render twice sometimes, once in the tab and again in sequence 2.

also, I found this forum discussing this same topic with some work around suggestions:
    https://community.avid.com/forums/p/53314/298455.aspx

I might not need nesting but I’ve gotten used to it. Maybe it’s the way I work. I’m making a movie that’s built almost like a sketch comedy show. I like to isolate each individual sketch in it’s own sequence. Plus, I’m using my editor as kind of a scratch pad to write and test ideas. Which seems to work better in different compartments. Keeps things cleaner. Then plug the sketch’s sequence into the movie’s sequence.

I really like cutting on avid but a lack of nesting might be a deal breaker for me. it’s like switching from layered compositing to nodal compositing, once you make the transition it’s hard to go back.

thanks again Dylan for taking the time to help out.

I certainly agree, nesting can be good, although as I said I’ve found FCP’s implementation to be far from perfects.

You could also look into clip colouring, it’s something I’ve used to visually track segments and themes within a larger show.
