One issue I’ve always had with Canopus’ ADVC-100 is Vegas displaying choppy video. And I’m talking about consistently over my last 3 pc’s. If it’s playing standard NTSC DV footage it’ll run fine for a bit, then after a few minutes it’ll get a little choppy. Then choppier and choppier as time goes on. Now if I simply flip to another application window then back into Vegas, it fixes it until a few minutes later it’ll start up again. It’s never been a big deal while editing because I’m always jumping between windows, but if I’m showing a client a fully rendered 10 minute video, I start to notice some jumps. Anyone else have this problem and possibly a solution?

Also I’m looking for recommendations on displaying hd footage on an external monitor. Do you all mainly just set up a second computer monitor and have Vegas output to that, or does anyone use an actual HDTV to preview video? I noticed Sony supported AJA’s Xena LHE and was looking at that. Something like Canopus’ ACEDVio but for HD. Any ideas?

    David,
I have the same EXACT problem as you do with the choppy video. It starts out playing ok then gets progressively worse. Unfortunately I have not figured out the problem. I’ve gone through all the recommended Vegas settings as far as pc setup & it helped a little, but it’s still very noticeable. Funny thing is that I have an older pc that gave me know problems at all. Hopefully someone out there may have an answer!

    Thanks

I use a secondary monitor. This is the easiest and least expensive option. I have two Samsung SyncMaster 215TW’s which give me more than enough editing space. Smooth playback is dependent on the power of your CPU’s and how much post processing you’ve done. I can view unprocessed HDV at full frame rates until I start color correcting. Then it slows down because each frame must be processed before it is displayed.

    John,
I have dual monitors (hooked to PC) and a television hooked up through the Canopus ADVC110. As I was saying above the funny thing to me is that this exact same setup ran perfect on my older less powerfull PC. On my newer dual core it’s very jump. This kind of tells me that there are variables other than cpu power that are affecting this jumpy video. Mine will jump just playing imported video with nothing done to it at all (preview not set on “Best” in Vegas). It’s frustrating when you upgrade equipment and it doesn’t run as well as what your replacing it with.
With your two monitor setup are you just viewing your work in the Vegas preview window?
Any other thoughts are most welcomed.

    Thanks

    Dave,

A couple of things to keep in mind. Preview is not multi-threaded in Vegas so it is only using one of your cores. If, for example, your old PC was a 3.2Ghz P4 and your new PC is a 2.4Ghz DualCore, the new PC is actually a lot slower for single threaded tasks like preview.

My QuadCore is 2.66Ghz and I can preview HDV M2T files at Preview Full with full frames 29.97fps but on Good Full it drops down to 19fps and at Best Full I get 9fps. All the time my CPU is only at 25% becasue it’s only using 1 of my 4 cores. 🙁

If you use the ADVC110 with HD it will convert that to DV and I assume the playback will be much worse due to the rescaling.

Yeah not having preview be multithreaded is a disadvantage, but I don’t think that’s the problem the other Dave and I have. Because the advc works fine to start out with, then gets progressively jumpier until you simply switch applications and switch back, I’m inclined to think it’s a Vegas issue.

Also I still would like some suggestions from anyone about component-out to an hdtv. Secondary monitors are all well and good but I like getting an idea of how clients might be seeing these videos in a real-world situation. I just like living life on the edge (of the action-safe zone!)
