  • Sennheiser EW 100 G2 – No free channels?

HI, I have a Sennheiser EW 100 G2 transmitter and receiver. I am using it in Sonoma County, California. I’ve been successfully using these units for about 14 years. Suddenly, it stopped getting the audio signal, even tho the RF indicator on the receiver shows a 100% signal. There is no signal indicated on the receiver’s display for RF. Also, the “Mute” indicator on the receiver is always on, even tho I can switch it on and off on the transmitter.

Here’s what I’ve done so far. I reset both units (using “Reset” on the menu). I turned off the transmitter, and on the receiver I chose “Scan” to look for free frequencies. After scanning thru all banks, it came up with “0 Channels Free”. That was very strange, because it had just been working. (I didn’t have a record of which frequency, unfortunately).

So, I picked a bank and channel on the receiver (Bank 8, Ch 1 (632.225Mhz) and then turned on the transmitter and tuned it to the same frequency. The RF indicator on the receiver immediately went to 100%. However, the MUTE indicator on the receiver was on, and did not respond when I changed the MUTE switch on the transmitter.

So, I’m stuck. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much in advance!

Hello John and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

I had a very similar thing happen last year with a G2. Everything was up, no switches muted, light showed mute, couldn’t turn it off. I think he even powered down, took out batteries, replaced batteries, and repowered. Nope.

Brought it back to me and it fired up.

Have you tried it in a different location?

The FCC announced in 2014 that the 600 MHz band has been re-purposed and sold off to other services, making all 600 MHz wireless microphones illegal in the United States. So perhaps it is a moot point whether a 600 MHz band wireless microphone is worth repairing?

Could be something like a new cell tower powered up. The 600MHz band isn’t ours anymore, which makes your old G2s illegal at some point, I don’t remember the dates for the change over. Regardless, a cell phone signal might cause the symptoms you are experiencing. I’m quite sure the Sennheiser receiver would not be able to interpret a cell phone signal. If I were writing the code, I would certainly mute the device in the face of an unknown signal.

That makes sense! I did try resetting the EW100 in 2 different locations about 45 minutes apart, but still in Sonoma County CA. Got the same result. It does indeed sound like maybe someone powered up a cell tower. I knew they were switching away from these frequencies but didn’t know about the illegality aspect. Thanks for taking the time to answer!
