  • Sending TC data through Audio Out

Posted by Brian Newell on October 31, 2006 at 11:02 pm

We are trying to record time-stamped mp3’s on a Marantz pmd-660 digital recorder for quick and easy sending out of transcriptions from the field.

We are shooting with a varicam and were wondering if it is possible to send the timecode data through the XLR output. Also, are we able to maintain two separate channels of audio from the 2 miked individuals as well as timecode through the audio out. Marantz says it can record timecode on one of the channels of audio, but the question is how do we get it there.

We are trying to avoid going for a higher priced recorder like the TASCAM which can directly accept and read timecode data.

There are lots of ways to do this. Easiest way would be from the mixer. Tape out to ch 1 and tc out from the varicam to ch 2. You will need a BNC to XLR adaptor. This will do the trick and has been the industry norm for years.

No Mixer method: You can use the 5 pin xlr out from the varicam to Ch 1 and tc out from the varicam to Ch 2. You will need to adapt the 5 pin xlr in order to work with the recorder.

Bottom line you will have a mix on ch 1 and the TC on ch 2. Transcript houses will have no problems with this.

    Sorry, one more thing.

I just need to know if there is any possibility of getting two separate channels of audio along with TC to the marantz. We’re pretty sure it’s not, but wanted to make sure, because we are trying to use the marantz for not only transcripts, but also as a back-up audio source. Right now we back up our audio to minidisc in the field, but because we want to send out transcripts, we were trying to add the marantz recorder and replace the minidisc, so that there would not need to be an additional item in the field, but if the marantz can only get a mix on one channel, then we would have to keep the minidisc as our backup. thanks.
