I record my audio with a mono shotgun mic on a boom, connected to my GL2 through a BeachTek adapter. GL2 audio levels are set manually (but always equal) to be as high as possible without peaking. I do all of my audio work within Premiere, except when I have major problems with a clip: in this case I go to Audition for noise reduction, parametric EQ, etc.

Sometimes, the recorded audio is perfect for 99% of a take, but the level peaks for a brief moment: distortion. Other times, I was too cautious with the level and set it way too low.

I was thinking… would it make sense to set the audio channels on my GL2 to different levels? They both get the same input from the mono mic anyway. One channel would always be high enough for the softer dialog, and the other low enough that it never peaks even on brief loud sounds. Then, in Premiere, I would select the best channel (Fill Left or Fill Right) for any given moment of the scene.

Anybody else do this? Other than having to apply a Fill effect to every bit of dialog, would there be any disadvantages to this method?
