Self-Contained QT – No?
Ok, I’m relatively new to FCP, and I’m having problems.
So far, I have been working away at projects on my MacBook Pro, and I have been keeping all associated files in a folder.
Then I read in some tutorials that you can save a self contained Quicktime that has all the video and audio included. I thought, great, but I don’t believe it – so I saved a self contained Quicktime, moved all the project assets to the recycle bin, and tried to open the project. It opened fine – I thought, great! Deleted the files from the recycle bin, and went to open the project – now ‘some project files are missing’ – disaster!!
What happened? This is a major feck up on my part now, as I only have a low res version of the rendered project.
Anyone help? ?

It’s not a self contained project, it’s a self-contained MOVIE as you note at the top of your post.
It’s a movie of whatever you just exported, generally your timeline. It’s just a single file of that finished movie. It has nothing to do with your project or all of your raw media files.
For archive purposes, many people will save a Quicktime Movie of their finished project instead of all their raw media. Then they clear off their media and start the next project. If you’re still in the middle of a project, you require all of the raw media to stay on the system until you are done.
The reason the project worked the first time you opened it is because all the media was in the Trash and FCP saw it. Once you cleared the Trash, it was all gone.
If you want to archive your timeline AND the media, then you use Media Manager to make a copy of the project.

but would you use a Self Contained movie if exporting to AE? I have yes and no?
