I’m trying to create the effect seen in the attached illustration of rippling water on straight lines. I’ve tried adding a Turbulence Displace effect on an adjustment layer on top of the straight lines, also tried adding masks with feather, but it always creates a cut off between the rippling lines and the straight ones which isn’t the desired look I’m going for (see screenshot of my attempt). If anyone can help me I’d be greatly appreciated as I’ve been at this for a day and can’t seem to figure out how to make it work.

Try Distort> Displacement map, use a greyscale image to drive the displacement (make a pre-comp of a black solid with a white blurred/feathered shape when you want waves) add-in noises, etc to randomize it/ make it wavey.

Hi Emma, you could also look at the Liquify effect which can be keyframed.

Thank you Greg! This also worked but managed to control better with a displacement map in the end. Handy one to know for future though!
