Selecting No Compression for QT export in Avid MC 6.5.2
Just upgraded one of our avids to the new 6.5.2 software. Was disappointed to see that the option to select NONE in the compression setting for export to QT.mov’s is now gone. We normally go out with the selection of None for compression and then bring the uncompressed file into Sorenson to create MP4’s. We like Sorenson and its been the same process for years and we are good with that process.
A friend recommended that we make an Animation file on export which equals no compression and it did look good. However… when we compressed that in Sorenson as we have done for the past 10 years… the MP4 was all over the place with strangest out of sync audio and just weird stuff. We tried this several times with the same results. So… Animation output on the export settings is not the way to go.
Someone just recommended DNxHD … and someone else recommended DNX220… which does not exist in the MC 6.5.2 software. Would DNxHD work ok with a SD 640×480 project?So… what is the equivalent NONE Compression selection for QT export in Avid that we should use and hopefully get the same great results through Sorenson that we have for years?

DNxHD220 is only available if you’re working 1080 59.94i. If you’re working Standard Def, Avid 1:1 should be equivalent to Apple None.

There is no DNxHD220 option in Avid MC 6.5.2… only DNxHD co-deck.Same thing?
We shoot so many 1080p, 29.97 formats. Will Avid 1:1x work uncompressed for HD footage 1080p?Would have been much simpler to just keep the NONE setting !!!

I’m guessing the lack of the “None” codec is more likely an issue with Quicktime than with Avid. 1:1x will work HD and SD, though it is massively overkill in my opinion. DNxHD220 is used as a mastering codec very frequently. In the export window, you have to open the DNxHD Codec window to select what flavor of DNxHD you want. They are based on frame rates and raster sizes. For example, DNxHD220 is available for 59.94i but not for 23.976 because there’s less frames, and the equivalent is DNxHD175.

The QT none vodec is one of the QT options so outside MC. Sounds like a QT change.

You might want to try enabling Legacy Codecs in the terminal.
This is for the PNG codec, but it might work for None, as well.
In Lion or Mountain Lion, you have to specify what codec you want to enable:
For PNG as an example, open Terminal and type:
qtdefaults write LegacyVideoCodecs ApplePNG enabled
if you are curious about other codecs use:
qtdefaults read InstalledLegacyVideoCodecs
This will give you a list of all the legacy codecs whether they are enabled or not. Find the name of what you want and replace the codec name part in the write formula above and you’re set.
For the full help menu of qtdefaults just type:
qtdefaults
Btw…None is really rarely used. Avid 1:1x would be the better choice for SD. Many systems would have trouble with None, As you have seen, avid DNX is only for HD.
