Is there not a way to select multiple tracks at once in PPro, so that extract can apply to a number of tracks/clips at once?

    NO is the short answer. You can select multiple clips on multiple layers and then ripple delete them;
    1. right click, ripple delete
    2. shift+delete
    3. if the clips are different lengths but you want to extract the in out section of a clip (sing the / shortcut) cut the in out points with the razor (shift+click with razor tool C)
    4. ctl+K shortcut to cut through all layers at given in and out points.

Snapping to In Out points is Q and W.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I was already using these techniques, but was hoping that I was just missing why I couldn’t find the very fundamental feature that every single NLE other than Premier is capable of. I think that is like number four on this list when you are creating a new NLE app.

Really can you name the every other NLE’s that have a multiple targeting function. I know FCP and AVID don’t.

Really? I don’t want to get into it with you here, but when you select an in and out point in Avid, you can select V1, V1+V2, V1-V6, or whatever, and then extract the material from all of them at the same time. You HAVE to be able to do that, because when you are working on a broadcast shoot and have 4 separate cameras and the tape goes to ESPN tomorrow, you don’t have time to go through the motions you just described with Premier to cut out 15 seconds from all of them. It most certainly does do that and has since like 1991, when I first started using it. I have only played with FCP, but I know it also does this with one or two keymoves. I also used a VelocityQ for a few years, and you can extract from 99 tracks at once if you want to simply by putting and I/O on the timeline and hitting one key. Look, I’m glad this thing works for you – I have to make it work for me somehow right now given a particular situation, and I appreciate the tips – but there is no need for anyone to play favorites and deny obvious major descrepancies with this app. It’s counterproductive in the long term. I actually like some things in Premier and quite a bit about the whole CS3 integration, but Adobe has MAJOR work to do to get this thing to a more usable level on the editing side – being able to extract/lift from numerous tracks at once, being able to reliably detect timecode changes from higer-end decks with either RS-422 or firewire, being able to tell you what footage is used in a timeline, being able to overwite/insert a clip with the hotkey no matter what panel is selected (the source panel has to be selected to do this, and that is dumb, because the “.” key doesn’t do anything in the other panel’s anyway, and often you are parked on the program panel or timeline after you have decided an in point for the source footage to be placed. I know….I know…just another Avid thing that makes too much sense to include it in Premier). Hey – I’m not a fan of Avid either – their hardware and the economic commitments they demand for every little feature are bullcrap, BUT there are some features that Avid has established that shouldn’t be reinvented, because they assure faster production. Toilet paper works best in rolls – no need to change it. I’ll not trouble you here again – every assumption I’ve made so far on what this thing can’t do has been correct, so I’m doing fine discovering those things on my own. Seriously though, thanks a bunch for trying to help.

If you’re looking to ripple across all tracks, just deselect any tracks (audio and video) and the ripple will effect all unlocked tracks. If you mark an in and out, the ripple or lift will obey that.

BTW, sorry to hear about everything you’re going through right now- I feel your pain on every level. I’m a longtime FCP/Avid/Quantel user who also uses Premiere enough to be as frustrated as heck with everything you’ve come across lately, plus a whole lot more. As some others have suggested, submit feature requests, although I’ve done that forever and almost nothing in the app has changed, especially in the realm of ‘pro’ features like proper TC and metadata support, but I keep submitting and hoping.

    Good luck,

HEY one more thing! I’m happy to report that I realized I am wrong on both the panning issue and used footage issue. I just didn’t have the “Usage” columns up, and I used the Channel Mapping feature to fix the issue of better stereo panning. Things are looking up. Premier Rules!

Litzwire, I’ve had a hard day, I apologize for being a painus in the anus about the targeting.

I misunderstood. Adding a clip to the layer can only be targeted to one layer. FCP’s delete function kills all layers in its path unless you lock the layer.

I’m not out to jack up that premiere pro is the be all and end all. It is a powerful tool and yes there are plenty of things I’d love to have added. One being able to remove all attributes on all selected clips.

It appears you’ve had a nightmare run with this software and for that I’m sorry you’ve been introduced to this app that way. I had a similar experience when I started using FCP. I was used to working with motion graphics and 3D in image sequences. It drove and drives me mad that FCP doesn’t allow image sequences – have to be imported to QT pro and output as a mov.

The audio abilities for this app are way underrated tho. the ability to apply multiple switchable (on/off) effects to an entire audio layer freaks my FCP mates out. Including the Bus abilities.

Consider this a virtual beer buy from me to you. I really want to help you find the fastest solutions.

Hey! That’s some rare internet class there. I apologize for my ranting…and cheers! As I said in my last reply (to myself) I did just discover a couple of things that have made me feel a lot better, particularly on the audio side. There’s no doubt I’m a bit uptight, for I have to deliver a nationally televised show in a couple of weeks using a brand new tool. But I’m sure with time I will find a comfortable workflow with this machine and will tend to look on its bright side – I am pulling off a good deal of real-time in full-rez HD, so that’s nothing to complain about. Thanks again!

Cheers, Full HD no rendering always nice to work on. I wish the edit god’s make things easier from here on in and you make the deadline with time to spare.
Catch ya round mate. – JOn 🙂

Just read your posts there. I dont know if it will help at all but if you want to trim more than one video track all you have to do is select all the tracks you want to trim and put your move tool in between two of the tracks and start dragging. Every track that you have selected will move. If you want to trim the footage and leave no gaps then all you need to do is as above but hold down the Ctrl and all the footage will trim until you find your out point. I use a Wacom tab (and it works for a mouse aswel) and all I do to select mutliple tracks is draw around them all.

I use PPCS3 and can see many great changes in it. Anything I have problems with rahter than e-mailing them I ring them and so far they have always replied and fixed major problems I have with the app. FCP and Avid are great apps aswel and I think it case of what you have been brought up on and what you need the app for.

Anyway I hope this info was some help if not now someday. Best of luck with your edit
    Take it easy.
