  • Selecting multiple clips in Segment Mode…

Posted by Aza Allen on November 11, 2009 at 12:43 am

I am an assistant editor for a production company and do a lot of grouping,

when I have multiple cameras in my timeline, I have to sync them. Right now to select multiple clips in “segment Mode” I have to click each individual clip and black space, how can I do this faster (mouse or otherwise) thanks all,

    Aza

Click above the Video track and drag down and to the right to select all the clips and black you want. (BTW, down and to the left lets you enter trim mode.)

The other option is to hold the Alt key (or Control key on Mac) and drag a box around the clips you want. This method works better if you have multiple tracks and only want V1, for instance.

Ohhh, ok, yeah, I was doing that, except I wasn’t dragging a box that completely surrounded the clips I want, I was assuming it worked like Premiere where as long as the box you drag touches the clips then they would be selected – Thanks so much for the tip!

    No problem Aza.

Yeah, FCP and Premiere work the same like that. With Avid you need to surround the entire clip you want. Glad we could help.

Along these same lines – is there a keyboard shortcut, for segment mode, to select 1 clip and then hit a shortcut to select everything after the clip (in the same track)?

…and also a shortcut to select the whole track? (couldn’t find it in the shortcuts help section of avid)

    Thanks again,

For Media Composer 3.x and upwards you can map Select to Right, Select to Left, and Select In to Out to your keyboard. Check your command palette if you’re on MC 3.x or 4.x and you’ll find it.

To mark every segment on a track, mark and In and Out on the whole track and use Select In to Out, or set your playhead at the start and use Select Right, or at the end and use Select Left.

Ok, shoot, I am using Media Composer 2.6.4

What can I do with that. I am trying to use the Control + drag option with the mouse, and I can select the video clips I want, but I can’t seem to jump down and also select the audio tracks I need with those. How can I select the video tracks, and then drag another square to grab the Audio tracks?

    Thanks guys,

    Aza,

I generally lasso all the tracks at one time. Alternately, you can use Segment Mode (the big red arrow at the bottom of the timeline – my keyboard is mapped to Shift-x) and select individual clips.

Keep in mind that you can’t move clips that are not consecutive in the timeline. For instance, clip A and clip C can’t be moved without also selecting clip B. And if you have any filler or empty spaces between clips that also needs to be selected.

“Keep in mind that you can’t move clips that are not consecutive in the timeline. ”

Is this still true in Avid 6?
