  • Selecting cloner index to place clones

    Posted by Michael Goldberg on December 7, 2017 at 9:05 pm

    Hi,
    I’m trying to selectively place clones on an object, and thought there might be an easy way to do this.
    Better explained –

    I have a grid aray with 100 clones. I want a red sphere to be on a bunch, and a yellow cube to be on a select fewer.
    I wonder if I place my red sphere and yellow cube under the cloner, is there a way to identify (for example clone index 4, 26, and 75 get the red sphere and all others get the yellow cube) which clones go to which index?

    I know I can use a gradient shader to specify distribution, but I’d like to be more exact. Any thoughts on this?

    Well, Here’s 1 solution to this issue –
    I could create simple geometry (cubes) and place these where I want a specific clone.
    I can then use a plain effector with falloff set to source. This works for me.

    Any other solutions, I’d be curious to hear.

    Here’s how I’d do it:

    1. Clone both objects onto whatever you’re cloning onto;
    2. With the cloner selected, use the Mograph>Mograph Selection tool to select the spots where you would like a particular clone to be placed;
    3. Create a Plane Effector, which will automatically be restricted to the Mograph selection you just created;
    4. Turn off the effector’s default Position parameter and set the Parameter>Modify Clone slider up to 100%.

    That will place only the second object under the cloner on your selection set.
