  • Selecting Blackmagic audio output disables start/stop?

Posted by Ken Pugh on May 20, 2014 at 7:08 am

The weirdest thing – just come back from a shoot and in a hurry to edit when I seem to have lost audio.

In Premiere Pro / Preferences I select Blackmagic playback to enable picture playback from by BM card, all plays fine but no audio. So I go back to Preferences/Playback and select Audio Device: Blackmagic playback and I loose the play button on the timeline. Nothing moves. Space bar doesn’t do anything, frozen. When I go back to the Audio device and select either Adobe DV or Adobe Desktop Audio, all is fine, the timeline plays and the spacebar operates the start/stop function. Except I have no audio as it arrives via SDI and my Blackmagic Card!

    Anyone seen this?

    Cheers, Ken.

    Adobe CC (latest)
    BM SDI Playback only card
Mac with 8G RAM OS 10.7.5

Yes. I’m having the exact same problem on Premiere 7.2.1, OS 10.9.2, iMac, thunderbolt Ultrastudio Express set up.

I tried installing the latest version of the BM Desktop software but that didn’t change anything. I haven’t had much time after that to do any further troubleshooting.

Since posting I’ve got Premiere working correctly again. I went into the mac Audio preferences, and switched outputs around a few times, selecting internal speakers and then the BM output. This fixed the problem. However I couldn’t re-create the problem by putting the audio outputs back how they were…. it was like it just needed switching to clear some kind of code blockage…. who knows! I’ve had a similar problem of timeline refusing to play some while back on a different system, on that occasion gave up and went to FCP.

    Hope this works for you.

    Best, Ken.
