  • Seeing Pro Res through Kona3 on Sony multiformat CRT, Walter?

Posted by Paul Harb on March 8, 2009 at 6:37 pm

This is the first time I am working on a long form project that was all shot in HDV. It was shot with a Canon V30 of all things but it is what it is. I am trying to figure out my workflow before I go ahead and digitize over 35 hours of footage. I really want to use the Pro Res HQ codec if possible and capture through FW but I have been reading issues with doing this?

I did a test and captured the HDV through FW transcoding to Pro Res (not HQ) and it seems to work fine but I cant seem to watch it on my Sony Multiformat monitor going through component. I dont see a Kona setting for this, so maybe its not possible, but I do know that the Sony’s will show HD over component, so is it because of the HDV frame size that this might not even be possible?

I know Walter knows quite a bit about this workflow as well as this monitor (never giving up my Sony CRT multiformat!), thought maybe you could provide some insight for me as to the best way to go about this projects workflow. thks again….happy sunday.

[Paul Harb] “I really want to use the Pro Res HQ codec if possible and capture through FW but I have been reading issues with doing this?

As Gary Adcock has noted, there is virtually no difference between ProRes and HQ other than the occassional green pixels / bad captures with HQ. We’re switching to all ProRes now and it seems to be working well so far.

[Paul Harb] “I dont see a Kona setting for this, so maybe its not possible, but I do know that the Sony’s will show HD over component, so is it because of the HDV frame size that this might not even be possible? “

It will be AJA Kona 3 (Frame Size / Frame Size) ProRes HQ. Like AJA Kona 3 1080i/29.97 ProRes HQ.

[Paul Harb] “never giving up my Sony CRT multiformat!), t”

If you want two more, I’m selling both of my Sony CRT’s. Finally going LCD with Flanders Scientific.

Ok one last question…is there any way to set in out points with this workflow, it seems as though you have to babysit the tape as its digitizing…Ill do it if I have to but its 35 hours of footage that I would love to be able to just set up tapes and walk away….any way to do this or no? thks again…

I don’t know about via Firewire. Definitely if you allow the Kona to do the conversion.

I was just waiting for the quality and price to reach my budget level. $5,000 for a 24″ accurate color grade quality is right in my price range. heck I was excited last year when I saw the TV-Logic at $8,000.

I was within a month of purchasing two TV Logics but now that I saw the FSI’s, I purchased three monitors for just $13,000. crazy, but it makes me happy!

Having a KONA you should use it to capture your HDV as ProRess.
If you capture FW will be FC who will make the conversion.
You will miss a first class RT capture/conversion for a second class slow one.

Well Im actually getting RT when its doing the conversion….Im not getting the 18% lag behind camera thing Ive been reading about…havnt really checked the stats on the systems that those people are talking about but it works great with my system.

What I am curious about is your saying that the QUALITY in the conversion is better?
