OK I WROTE THIS ONCE AND LOST IT, SO THIS IS SHORT.

DECKlink basic sdi card in a G5 FCP will remote to Sony J-H3 but not Sony DVW-A500p.
IT will see video and audio thorough SDI for both. both Remote in same way down 422.
Try loads of combinations on deck and FCP. searched the cow and no luck.
What is weird, Blackmagics own control prog will control the DVW but still says no comms no wont capture..
    any clues

    Matt,

Check your DVW-500 again- make sure it’s not something in the menus. I’ve had problems before, when hiring a deck especially, where someone’s screwed around with the menu settings. It’s taken a while sitting with the manual to get it back on line. They should work right off the bat, both using sony 422 protocol – but there may be a Decklink ‘gotcha’ I don’t know about…

I have the digi and J-H3 hooked up to old and new ( mac and PC) Avids and DVD encoder all day and they work fine, I had gone through the menu settings on the deck and cant see what i would have to change.
DVW-500 is an industry work horse, so i was suprised when i did not work. The J-H3 is a newer model and works fine!! i can usually problem solve most issues but this ones odd.

Make sure your RS422 cable is connected to the IN connector of the deck and NOT the OUT and make sure PARA RUN is off on the deck menu. Both those items are not part of the JH3 deck.

    Cheers Baz

Check those and PARA RUN was disabled and RS422 is in ‘IN’.
    any other thoughts?

I can control the deck when i am in Blackmagics own controller prog but it still says ‘no comms’even tho i can shuttle the deck.
I am now thinking it is a card issue, even though it should be a standard 422 remote!!!

Just another thought and something I have experienced before – and the clue is the ability to control the deck but get a ‘no comms’ error. The deck is controlled using RS422. This comprises of balanced send and balanced receive; 2 wires each way, phase inversed so as to cancel out any electrical glitches that could occur along the cable length. Ok so much for the theory!

I have had a faulty RS422 cable where one leg had come off and it worked OK on a Sony J3 but not on a DVW500; in your case it is the return data (status/handshake) that is not working. So try changing your cable. Otherwise it could be the card with the ‘one legged’ line.

Other than that I suggest you try some other deck controller and see where the problem exists.
