  • security camera footage mp4 won’t open

Posted by Larry Brewer on October 29, 2018 at 3:55 pm

I have a thumbdrive with mp4 footage from a home security camera.
This footage plays fine in VLC, PotPlayer, but not WMP, or Quicktime.
And it won’t open in Vegas for editing.
    Anyone with any suggestions?

    Hi Larry

Have you tried converting it with Handbrake ?

Yes, that was the first thing I tried after it wouldn’t open in Vegas 15, then Vegas 12. I have also tried multiple PCs and Adobe Premier on different desktops. Again.. it plays just fine in PotPlayer and VLC. But not WMP or Quicktime Player.
Apparently, there are proprietary codecs used in the CCTV industry.

I found a work around using VLC. As I had mentioned VLC was one of the players that would play the clips. So I used it to do a convert back to MP4 at 5mbs and that imported just fine. Thanks you for your help and suggestions. Much appreciated.

    Hi Larry

Happy to ear that you solved your problem. Just keep in mind that sometimes VLC files will create problems within Vegas. All depends how critical your project is if ever it starts acting up.

    Cheers !
