  • Second graphics card, for triple monitor support

Posted by Daniel Westergren on January 21, 2007 at 2:19 am

    Hi,

I’m considering buying a second graphics card, to be able to use three monitors with Premiere Pro 2.0.

Currently I have an nVidia GeForce 5950 Ultra card for my two 17″ monitors. I’m considering a GF FX 5200 – 128 MB for adding a 19″ monitor.

Will this work? Or what other recommendations do you have for a fairly cheap second graphics card for triple monitor support that works with Premiere Pro 2.0?

    Thanks!

I cant see the use for a 3rd PC monitor (other than HD)…but most of us do have a 3rd NTSC or PAL TV monitor attached to our workstations for preview. While Windows does support dual video cards, there are some restrictions, like both must be identical?

Well, it’s mainly to have one monitor for any other applications that are open at the same time, while two of them can be used for Premiere Pro.

Do the graphics cards have to be identical if the two monitors used for Premiere Pro are connected to the same graphics card, while the third monitor is connected to the second graphics card?

I don’t know, Mike. I am getting so used to having two monitors, that a third PC monitor might be pretty darn handy. As long as I can still have a fourth (my HDTV).

I can see having After Effects open in one, and Premiere Pro in two. Yes, I can certainly see that. Hmmm. I wonder?

    Now look what you started!!!!!

Scroll down to the link I gave you. For 30 monitors with 20″ or 21″ screens around $ 200K.

If you add the system to drive it, add another $ 80K plus or minus.

Neither would mine. It would probably lead to either divorce or bankruptcy. LOL

As we say here in the Netherlands: Ik heb niets te kiezen, dat bepaalt de directrice.

Or in English (free translation): I have to abide, to what the Director will decide.

    Tempting, isn’t it? 🙂

One problem, though. I only have normal PCI slots (no PCI Express). On Adobe’s hardware compatibility page there seems to be only AGP and PCI Express card that are compatible with Premiere Pro 2.0.

Does that mean I have to get a motherboard that supports PCI Express? Or if not, how would I know what PCI graphics cards that have support for Premiere Pro 2.0?
