I am transferring a bunch of shows from a winXP machine with CS3 to archive them on one drive. There are a lot of missing files spread out over the network on different drives. I am an FCP user and there is search function built into the relink media feature. I noticed CS# doesn’t have that. Is there a way to search for files when you open a project that the particular project asked for?

Yes there is a similar feature in Premiere pro. When you do open the project file the program will begin looking for the media. If it doesn’t find the media it’s going to ask you where it is. Use the “exact file name” matching check box to ensure a good match. If you keep the media in same folder naming structure you often only have to select the first clip in the list of media and Premiere finds the rest of them. Be patient if you have a lot of media!

Finding the clips to link them into project is half the battle – if you want to physically move the project AND assets, then you need to go to Project > Project Manager, and this will repackage the whole works into a new, consolidated folder.

The default option of “New Trimmed” keeps only the media actually used in the project, if you want ALL clips, untrimmed, then select “Collect Files and Copy”.

I have not used this feature myself – I recommend reading the Adobe HELP file on the subject so you understand the process and get it right

This feature works pretty well. I had one issue though that some stills were not copied from my project. Some of the files not copied were ones that did not appear in sequences.

I’m using Premiere Pro 7 on Windows Vista.
If I briefly minimise the project to use another application (internet/dictionary), when I return to Premiere all of the video clips have gone offline. From then on, it always asks me to find them- and even when the FIND CLIPS box closes, the files have not been relinked. I cannot relink them. I have not moved or changed the source video. Any suggestions?
