Seagate FreeAgent for Mac 1.5TB Hard Drive – any good?
Posted by Olly Lawer on February 14, 2009 at 10:46 amHi,
I am extremely excited as i’ve finally (after a LOT of research) brought an EX1. It will arrive next week.
I need a really good external hard drive that will be fast, quiet and reliable as this will be my main storage device with my EX1.Has anyone used the Seagate FreeAgent for Mac 1.5TB Hard Drive? I have heard that Seagate are good. I’m a little confused as in the specs it says it is a Firewire 800, although then states it is a Firewire 400…?

February 14, 2009 at 11:29 pmHi,
Thanks for your reply. All three drives, Seagate, G-Tech or CalDigit all run at 7200rpm and have firewire 800. I’m interested to know the detail of what makes the G-Tech and CalDigit faster to edit with?
Also, out of the two (G-Tech or CalDigit) – which one is quieter?
Thanks

February 15, 2009 at 3:23 amExperience with seeing drives die… I couldn’t tell you which one runs quieter to be honest I’ve never noticed any of them being particularly noisy.

Just to throw another in…how does the OWC compare?

Just a shame I can’t buy it in the UK, not sure how the warranty works if I buy from the US.

February 16, 2009 at 4:33 amWhatever you buy, get two. Edit with one and back it up every night to the second one.
And, I’m not getting the noise question. On most of those drives, I usually have to touch it to make sure it’s running. Except when the fans are running.
We have a shelf where we have our external drives and we have a small fan blowing on them. Heat kills drives.

February 16, 2009 at 6:04 pmCalDigit arrays are designed specifically for video editors. The entire system has been optimized for this purpose.
The CalDigit VR has an ambient temperature controlled smart fan that does not even run unless the unit needs the additional cooling. This reduces unwanted noise making the CalDigit VR a very quite array. Also the CalDigit VR has removable drive modules.
