Activity Forums Avid Media Composer SDM error

My XPress Pro (4.1) just developed this problem.

“The AvidSDM (Storage Device Manager) could not be loaded or initialized. This could be due to a mismatch or missing AvidSDM Shared Library and Service can result in degraded performance while running the Avid application. Please make sure that the proper AvidSDM Shared Library and Service are installed on the system.”

I’d spent two days digitizing to an external drive and editing, the XP was working fine. Then I open the app on third day and get the SDM error. I disconnect the drive and reboot and the XP opens fine no error. Reboot again with external drive running and the error is back, so problem is between XP and my drive. I can still get into XP and edit the media on the drive, but I can only play back for about 2 mins then XP stops.

I’ve had XP installed for three years, never seen this problem b4. Any1 got any ideas how to rectify it..? I’m working on a 20 min doc and if I can’t play it our coz it stops every 2mins I’m in teh dodo… Is there a fix?

Sounds like your SDM is messed up somehow. You might want to try to reinstall the software. Just copy your projects to a safe location (in case the worst happens), unplug your external drive, uninstall then reinstall Avid Xpress. Reboot, fire it up with the external drive plugged in and see what happens.

The entire uninstall/reinstall only takes about 20 minutes, so it’s worth a shot. And if you back up your projects and unplug your media drive you won’t have to worry about losing anything.

Otherwise, your drive may be going dead. You can open Avid Storage Manager and run a system check on it. If that’s the case, get your media off of it immediately and replace it.

    Michael.
