    Hi,

I’ve got a KONA 2 that I’m trying to interface with a DVCAM deck, and I’m trying to keep the signal digital. The facility where I work runs analog to/from the DVCAM deck, using the dBeta as a transcoder, but I’d like to keep the signal digital (and keep the dBeta deck free). Our DVCAM deck has a SDTI (QSDI) interface on the back (there is an SDI add-on board, but we don’t have it) which is, as I understand it, incompatible with the SDI format the KONA2 uses. I’ve tried finding out more about this online, but have had little luck with my research so far.

Can anybody tell me what the differences are between the formats, and if there is a converter between them?

    thanks

I’ll wager you need the SDI board, but you might ask Rudy in AJA support about an alternative if they have one… email support@aja.com, Rudy or one of his excellent support folks will get back promptly I’ll wager.

It looks like SDTI is a SONY specific interface for doing high speed or faster than real time transfers into SONY edit stations. This is a sony specific protcol and I doubt that the AJA supports it via the HDSDI/SDI inputs.

It is also used for machiine to machine dubbing. But from what I am reading here

    https://www.sony.ca/dvcam/manuals/DSR-1800-1800P.pdf

    it’s all sony specific.

David is correct, the SDTI is will not work with standard SDI interfaces.

    Karim,

SDI in this case is not Strategic Defense Initative instead it stands for
Serial Digital Interface, SDTI is Serial Digital Transport Interface.

SDTI is not unique to Sony only. Sony and Panasonic decks can have both SDI and SDTI inputs and outputs.

In an nutshell the only method to obtain a true digital clone is via SDTI not SDI.

SDI dubs results in compression taking place each time. SDTI does not.

The Kona 2 does not have a SDTI inputs only SDI.

Yes, it is also used by EVS within their Live production workflow.

“re-compression” may depend upon the codec being used on the recieving end but SDI inherently does “re-sampling” in a component digital fashion. Thus, creating some degredation, however seemingly acceptable to most.

SDTI, while ‘neat’ has never really found traction being a file transfer method. Fibre Channel coupled with San solutions have almost negated most SDTI develpement into workflow solutions. Now, primarily a source of confustion. 😉
