I am working on a project being edited in Avid with a mixture of SD footage and HD footage. The project is being delivered in HD. The client wants the SD footage to be up converted to HD, but they do not want there to be wings. What is my best option to do this and to make the footage not look terrible.

I’ve been looking at Red Giant Magic Bullet Instant HD. Has anyone experienced trying to use this with Avid? There’s a really short turn around on this project so I would like to know any issues I may incur along the way.

Any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Umm… wings? Can you elaborate?

You mean “Pillarbox” which is the black bars on the side which maintains the full 3×4 frame.

What you need to do if you want to fill the 16×9 HD frame without making fat people is to blow up the shot so it fills the frame left to right. This means that your top and bottom will be cut off. This may not be what you want on a per shot basis.

Fortunately Avid has a solution in the “reformat effect” which allows you to select the source and program side of the effect. So you would apply it, select 4×3 as source, 16×9 as program and then you can actually move the frame up and down in the shot to reframe it for content. This is called “pan and tilt” as opposed to the usual “pan & scan” which fits a 16×9 frame into a 4×3 frame.

Ohhh! I think you’re right, Terence. I should have either given it more thought or should get out more often 😀
