SD to HD convert questions for broadcast
Posted by Carly Smith on March 13, 2010 at 2:07 pmwe live webcast and even though its compressed for web, we would like to improve image quality AMAP.
Currently shoot SD using Sonys (can’t afford HD cameras yet) and we run from switcher to a standard DA, which sends the signal to the web + various monitoring points (backstage, etc.)
I have tried my friend Google to try and find a unit that would take the SD out of my switcher, upconvert it to HD or even a pseudo HD (as long as it improves it) then lets me send it to at least 4 outs.
Am I dreaming, or does such a thing exist?

Upconverters will scale SD signals up to HD, but they will not ‘improve’ the original signal. What do you mean by pseudo HD? If you mean SD widescreen the model of your cameras would determine if you can output a widescreen signal.

will the FS1 improve your quality in your specific workflow???
I really don’t think so. think before spending 3000$ on the FS1you are talking about a standart DA i hope this isn’t composite.
feeding composite to a encoder will waist a lot of encodingpower.
if it is try to make your COMPLETE workflow SDI(except backstage monitor’s). this will help you more.if it is SDI already maybe a ProcAmp or noisereduction system can upgrade your workflow.
upscaling SD to HD and then encode it will introduce 2scaling step’s which will only degrade your quality!! and be honoust do you really want to deliver your content in HD on the web.
i hope you can tell us more about your setup.

camera out > backstage monitors BNC=BNC
backstage monitors to switcher BNC > composite
Switcher is either a Videonics MX Pro or a Panasonic WJ MX-20(before you laugh, you try and stay in business on tight budgets in tough economic times)
switcher out to DA BNC=BNC
DA to screens/webcast BNC=BNC
Just trying to pump up the quality without breaking the bank…
any further suggestions?
$3,000 is out of my price range right now – we found and Evertz for less.

thanks for letting us know what your setup is.
i never worked with the MX-20 but did a lot of low profile stuff with the MX-50.(same generation big brother of the mx20)
What i know about this mixer is that the Composite decoder’s suck if you can run in your signals in Y/C your picture will look better even if you still use your CVBS output’s. maybe have a look at a encoder that accept Y/C. just give the final encoder less noise / crosscolor /moire to deal with.one hidden secret of the mx-50 and probaly the mx-20 too that you can genlock this mixer with the external key input making it easy to cut between camera’s

that has been a HUGE issue for me – 2 cameras – works like a champ – 3? its choppy and messy.
would you mind posting a step-by-step setup?
