SD to HD conversion
Posted by Jim Hoey on January 7, 2010 at 10:57 pmHi gang,
Does anyone know if there is a software freeware that converts SD to HD – if not what are the best solutions for FCP 5?

Compressor. But being FCP 5, you can only upconvert to DVCPRO HD or Uncompressed HD. And there aren’t many presets…but you should have those. That is free.
Instant HD from Red Giant Software is another option…not free.
Might try MPEG STREAMCLIP from square5.com. That is free.

You saved me with Simple Video Out a couple of years ago.A couple more q’s.
I am editing a TV series. Will I need an HD deck to print to tape? Can I print a HD show on an SD tape?
Can you relate the process for Compressor?Thx again Shane!

What are the delivery requirements of the network? You HAVE to know that before you can output anything. You should know this before you start editing really. They tell you what format they want it delivered on, and what all the tech specs of the master should be.
[Jim Hoey] ” Can I print a HD show on an SD tape? “
Absolutely. All HD capture cards downconvert to SD.

Just choose the setting you want to convert to from the ADVANCED CONVERSIONS folder.

January 8, 2010 at 7:24 pmWe can find out the particular broadcaster requirements for HD. We have shot in SD for some time and are considering an HD provision.
What I meant was is it possible to record the HD to SD after having converted the SD to HD or do I have to record an HD show to and HD deck or device?

Yes. TOTALLY possible. Just have the card downconvert the signal to SD. Easy peasy. Might not look as good as if you stayed SD all the way through (upscaling SD to HD did some damage), but it should look OK and be fine.
[Jim Hoey] “or do I have to record an HD show to and HD deck or device? “
No…get the right capture card and deck and you can record to whatever format you need. Within reason.
