    Hello there. First post.

For the past several years I have been editing our projects in SD (either 4×3 or 16×9) even though the video and assets are almost always 720p or higher. I have done this because all of our final deliveries have been to DVD, SD broadcast, or the web. Editing in SD saves me time and storage space. Also, I don’t like my SD broadcast commercials to be letterboxed so I always edit those 4×3.

Now, with the arrival of HD video on the internet, I would like to continue to edit on a SD timeline for our SD deliverable projects but export a 720p or even 1080p version for demo purposes in the sales room and online. It’s OK if the 4×3 SD timelines have black bars on the side on the 16×9 exports.

Of course I have tried just selecting a different output in the Export windows in FCP but it doesn’t use the native resolution of my assets to make the export. It just upconverts everything. I have tried making a new sequence with the 720p/1080p settings then doing a copy/paste of the SD timeline, but you already can imagine the mess that makes.

Any other suggestions on how to easily upconvert a timeline using the native source resolution of files?

[Teddy Smith] ” would like to continue to edit on a SD timeline for our SD deliverable projects but export a 720p or even 1080p version for demo purposes in the sales room and online. “

So you want to take your HD footage…that you captured as SD (thus changing the color space from REC 709 to REC 601….then edit in SD…but then UPCONVERT that SD footage to HD and try to have it be ACTUAL HD?

It won’t…it’ll be software upconverted SD footage, and won’t look all that great. If you want to show them that footage in HD, you’ll have to recapture it in HD.

Recapture the footage AS their native resolution. You can’t just tell your footage, that you captured as SD “hey, it’s OK, you can be HD now.” No. You need to recapture it as HD.

    Thanks for the reply.

Everything has always been captured in the native resolution, usually HDV. My workflow is to edit the HD clips into my SD timeline, let final cut resize automatically, crop and adjust, then color correct as needed.

All of my assets are HD. Only my timeline is set to SD.

    Ahh.
Then change your Easy Setup to match your footage, HDV1080i60. Make a new project, cut and paste the cut from the SD timeline to the HDV timeline (or make a ProRes one). Then with all of your footage highlighted, REMOVE ATTRIBUTES…Basic Motion and Distort. Then all will be sized to fit HD. If you did any moves on the footage, then those will be gone too, so be careful with REMOVE ATTRIBUTES.
