I’m having trouble understanding why recently compressed files aren’t playing smoothly over my REAL Magic Xcard. Most 720×480 NTSC mpegs I have been producing with PP2 and viewing with the Xcard have been compressed to around 300MB. I have recently been fooling around with HD and have captured some footage in 1080p that I have then tried to downconvert to standard definition. After resizing the aspect ratio and reducing the quality of the compression quite a bit, I have been able to produce mpegs roughly the same size as the ones that I have been accustomed to.

However, when I try to play them through the Xcard or Windows Media Player, the files lag badly. Unfortunately I’m no AV expert, so any help is much appreciated. What variables can affect the playback of an mpeg other than the overall file size?
