  • SD & HD footage – suggested sequence settings?!

Posted by Julian Stewart on June 2, 2010 at 4:04 pm

    Hi all,

I am currently cutting a documentary where half the footage is SD and half is HD.
Should I use a HD sequence or should I use a SD sequence?
If I use HD sequence I have to make the SD footage larger, if I use SD sequence I have to make the HD smaller.

Is there standard practice here? If so what is it?

    Thanks

The standard practice would be to edit in whatever resolution your final product intends to be. If you don’t know, then err on the conservative side and edit HD – you can always downconvert later and not lose resolution unnecessarily.

But if you edit in HD you need to process the SD footage. How well the footage is able to be upconverted will help you decide if HD is even a choice. If the SD is extremely well shot on DigiBeta, it can be upconverted via hardware and come out looking pretty good. If it is so so DV footage it is going to be tough. Using a shoot or two every now and then is one thing but 1/2 the video would not look very good.
