  • SD footage and Video FX plug-ins.

    Hi there,
I’ve been working on Standard Definition footage in Sony Vegas Pro 10 for the past 18 months. (PAL 720 x 576 25fps). I live in Australia. I have edited 50 hours down to 2 hours (12 month motorcycle trip around the USA in 2005).

I have read that using too many Video FX plug-ins will reduce the final quality of the SD footage. Is this true?

I love Super 16mm and would like to achieve this look. Is this possible? What plug-ins should I use to achieve this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Regards, Jane

To some extent. As long as you use effects moderately (as you should),
    you are quite ok.

The best plugin on the market right now to emulate a Super 16mm look
    in Sony Vegas is FilmConvert.

[Jane Wielecki] “I have read that using too many Video FX plug-ins will reduce the final quality of the SD footage. Is this true? “

Vegas Pro processes FX internally as uncompressed 4:4:4 so there is no loss of quality due to FX processing in Vegas. What people might be referring to is that SD is pretty low quality to begin with so it doesn’t hold up well to a lot of FX. You should use as many as you need to get the look you want and no more. 😉

VASST CinemaLooks-1 has Pushed 16mm setting that might be close to what you are looking for. You can tweak it further to fine tune it once you apply it.

Jane, Thanks for the kind words. I’ve been extremely swamped at work with year-end projects so I haven’t be able to spend as much time here as usually do but it’s nice to know that it’s appreciated when I do.
