  • SD and HD on same timeline- HELP

Posted by Jared Smith on April 22, 2009 at 7:26 pm

    Hey guys,
I know I am going to get alot of grief over this from you guys, but I shot a ceremony with two cameras. One was a JVC GYHD200 and the other was an HVX. I just shot on tape instead of P2, but I shot to firestore with the JVC. So now I have SD footage from the HVX and HD footage from the JVC. In final cut when I drug an HD clip into the timeline it asked to change my preferences to match the footage as usual… I said yes. Now when I drag the SD footage in the timeline it is smaller… does that make sense? In other words, when I drag the SD on a track above the HD, you can still see the HD footage on the sides of the SD footage going on behind it. Is there a way to either shrink the HD footage to match the SD or a way to get the SD to take up the same amount of width?
thanks a ton for the help

I found another post where a user got blasted for not searching forums/manuals before asking this same question. I did a quick search online (because campus does not have the manuals lying out for our use) and it seems that most people suggest using Compressor… is this right?
I guess I need to know the order of operation. I am capturing the SD tapes right now. Should I go ahead and finish capturing, and then build my timeline with both HD and SD in the same timeline, then export that to Compressor? Is that the right plan for this? It is about 8 hours of SD footage to be edited down to about 2 hours…
thanks guys and hope I am not annoying anyone too bad

Easiest way is to use the wireframe function in the canvas viewer. Make sure your sequence settings for your edit are what you want to export after your edit (HD or SD), then just resize the footage. Using compressor seems a bit much for what you’re asking here. Might be worthwhile to borrow a manual or check one out or something. Pretty simple to figure out. Use the “help” drop-down and use the PDF version. Might also want to watch and log your footage before capturing all 8 hours, too; probably save you some time (and lots of space, esp. on a campus system) in the long run.

so in that case am i resizing the SD footage to extend out to match the HD footage or am i shrinking the HD footage to match the size of the SD footage? if I stretch the SD will it look pixelated?

If you want your final export to be 16:9, then you’ll be either up-cropping or making your SD footage anamorphic. This will impact the quality and cause some issues. If you want your edit to be 4:3 then you’ll be taking your HD footage down to match that frame size (letterbox, anamorphic, or crop which I recommend), but it shouldn’t affect the physical quality. If all you need for your end export is SD, definitely use a 4:3 editing base.

thanks for the help josh- since i won’t be burning it to a blu ray for the client, i suppose it is just a SD finished DVD… so, i will just make the HD match SD… another way of doing this is to start the SD timeline, then pull in the HD footage and when it ask me to change preferences just say no- is that correct?

That’s right, don’t match the Timeline to the HD specs.

I may be speaking out of turn a bit, but I believe the user manual is available in the help menu electronically. It’s the first or second selection.

No Jason, you’re not speaking out of turn. It is available as PDF in the help drop-down, and a real convenience for these type of issues.
