I am working on a documentary project. Most of the clips will be from an HD camera. However, we will need to use some clips that were shot with an SD camera. What is the best way for me to make the final project work and look ok? This is the first time I have ever tried to blend two formats, so specific information would be appreciated. TIA, Jim

We just talked about this 3 days ago in this thread:

    Editing both SD & AVCHD

I would edit the entire project in HD and place generated media or another nice background behind the 4:3 SD media so that the two black bars on each side are filled in with the background. You see this a lot on the news when they broadcast in HD but have some footage from the field that’s in SD. IMHO, this is the best trade-off when blending both formats.

Thanks, John. I had done a search for SD and HD, and the thread you told me about did not show up. I appreciate the ideas. All the best, Jim

John, either my assumptions about producing a final product in 16:9 on a DVD are wrong, or I am doing something wrong in the render process. I used your idea of placing generated media around the SD clip (from the earlier thread you mentioned). Everything looks really good in the Vegas Pro 8 preview. The project settings are HDV 1080-60i. When I rendered I chose MPEG2. In DVDA the SD clips fill the whole screen, and there are black lines at the top and bottom of the HD clips. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Jim

John, I found what I was doing wrong. I adjusted the render settings to HDV, and it appears to be rendering correctly. Thanks, Jim

Glad you got it figured out. SD 16:9 and HD 16:9 are not the exact same aspect so you will get slight black bars on the sides of the SD 16:9 unless you also use the “Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox)” option when rendering.
