    Hi all

I have some old SD footage (PAL 50i) which I digitalized from tapes. I realized that I can improve the quality a lot by up-converting to HD and apply some filters then (i.e. unsharp mask). But I’m not sure how to do this correctly in Vegas.

I would like to convert the SD 50i to HD 50p also using a de-interlacing filter (I liked the results of BCC de-interlace). How should I configure Vegas, apply the de-interlacing filter and do the up-converting?

    – I found a tutorial that suggests setting the Vegas project settings to double PAL progressive and then apply YADIF as a media effect. Can I do the same with BCC de-interlace to achieve best 50i to 50p conversion?
    – Should I set the Vegas project settings to PAL SD or to HD and then import my SD footage?
    – Should I up-convert using BCC uprez or similar or should I just render to HD?
    – Should I apply filters like unsharp mask in the same project or render first to HD and then apply my filters in a second project?

Sorry for the many questions. But I think for de-interlacing to work properly I should use an SD project and for sharpening and up-converting I should use an HD project. Therefore I’m a little confused.

Thanks a lot for any help!

    Stefan

For upscaling and deinterlacing my old SD videos I use SimpleSlugUpscale (google for it). In addition, I stabilize videos using deshaker plugin for VDub (imho it works better that Vegas stabilizer). The resulting videos (encoded by loseless coded) I use in Vegas.

    A little example:
    Source (MPEG2, PAL, 50i)
    Deinterlaced + Upscaled (MP4, 1024*768, 50p)
    Deinterlaced + Upscaled + Deshaked (MP4, 1024*768, 50p)

Some details were lost by transcoding from loseless AVI to MP4.

P.S. I wrote bat-file that help me to do that. I simply select files in Total Commander, press custom button on toolbar and voila (after a few hours 🙂 ).

I think I found the solution for this problem in Sony Vegas:

    1. Open a Vegas project with HD settings
    2. Import the SD footage
    3. Apply the de-interlacing filter not as a track or event effect, but as a media effect. That way apparently it will work with the source media resolution and successfully de-interlace my media.
    4. Apply all the other effects as usual as track or event effects and profit from HD resolution.
    5. Render to HD

Some important points in my case:
    – I applied BCC deinterlace in Boris RED as a media effect. But Boris RED recognized my HD project settings and used those. I had to manually change the Boris RED project settings to SD for the de-interlacer to work!
    – My SD footage is quite blurry. Boris uprez didn’t make a big difference compared to just importing the SD footage to Vegas. But applying BCC unsharpmask in an HD project instead of an SD project made a huge difference!

    Best,
    Stefan
