Hi I’m trying to figure out what is the best way of doing this odd conversion (SD 4/3 letterbox to Sd 16/9 dvd), I’m doing this because my client wants to have his footage displayed without letterbox and without stretching on new Lcd Tv’s, how can I do this with maximum quality possible?

I would do this in compressor, go to compressor and choose create new setting, choose quicktime movie or MPEG 2 for dvd and then go to the geometry tab in the inspector window, then choose the 720 480 and then set to either NTSC CCir 601 or PAL CCir depending on your needs.

So, i crop the edges of letterbox in Compressor preview window, and then set 720×576 output (for me it’s pal size) and then export a squished image to be the anamorphisized in FCP?

No you wouldn’t use cropping, because you want to go from 4:3 to 16:9, so you need to scale your image up (and lose image quality), if you had a 16:9 letterbox image, then you could use cropping to get rid of the letterbox.

So the way I described in the first instance would be the way to go, you don’t need to send it back to FCP from compressor, yes the image will be squished, but there’s not an awful lot you can do about that.
