SD 23.98 REF tape into DS
Posted by Earle Nichol on January 20, 2009 at 1:07 amHey Gang,
So I’ve done my SD 23.98 offline at 14:1 in my composer 2.7. I’ve sent my OMF to the DS and dropped it into a 1080p 23.98 project..everything came in fine. I now want to double check things by outputting my 23.98 offline to digibeta so I have a refernce of the offline…….the problem is how do I get it into my Hi Def DS project,…a QT for a 44 min show will be huge but DS doesn’t have a SD 23.98 setting so I can’t even dig it in then drag into my 1080p timeline… I really wanted to do the offline at DNx 36 but the production house is concerned about space compared to 14:1.
ANy info greatly appreciated.
thanks

January 20, 2009 at 7:48 amOutput to Digital Betacam, 3:2 pulldown is added. In the DS open new NTSC sequence. Capture DigiBeta output. Now Open 1080p 23.98 sequence. Drag the entire Digibeta 29.97 clip, holding the F key, to the 23.98 sequence, probably on an new video track. Now find a mixed field frame and apply 3:2 contract from the Time effects tool bar. This will need to be rendered. Proceed to split show.

January 20, 2009 at 4:28 pmHey Eric,
thanks for cruising the posts so late at night. I have already output the digibeta, so I will give this a shot. Thanks so much for helping out. I’ll let you know how it goes.

January 20, 2009 at 10:28 pmHey Eric,
I did the test, and after some messing with reference all went well.
I imported the OMF into DS and then followed your instructions. Only thing that is a little odd, is the offline sequence from the digibeta is 6 frames longer than my DS timeline. Any thoughts?
Otherwise it went very well.thanks again

January 20, 2009 at 11:06 pmDo you mean the Digibeta 29.97 clip when placed on the 23,98 timeline with 3:2 removed is 6 frames longer than your omf imported sequence? If so the clip may appear to be longer but, if all works correctly, the picture and sound will be in sync and to the correct duration with just extra black and silence in the converted clip.
Hope that makes sense.

January 21, 2009 at 12:31 amYes the SD 23.98 tape that was brought into the HD Sequence ended up being longer than the OMF import…6 frames. The sequence was 58″ long so 6 frames over an hour…6frames/min x 60min = 360 frames/24fps = 15 seconds…Is this correct? All the shots lined up..it’s just long…any more thoughts(other than I’m crazy)???

January 22, 2009 at 7:21 pmHey Eric,
Have you guys had any luck in digitizing from a HVR1500 HDV deck into an AVID DS? I cannot get the DS to see the HDSDI out of the Deck…I’m wondering if there is a frame size issue that is screwing with the DS..(crazy I know)
thanks

January 23, 2009 at 1:43 amOkay, I have got the HDV going into the DS but it is reading VITC Funny enough I now realize from my offline test that the Adrenaline was reading VITC & not LTC( I know this because of the TC numbers on my cuts that the DS put on the timeline) I know everyone says that I should be transfering the HDV to HDCAm…and I am going to test that as well, I just thought I would check to see if anyone else had any success in getting HDV into a DS.
thanks

January 23, 2009 at 9:25 pmHey Eric,
Okay, So the client has gone and shot HDV 1080i 59.94 in 24p mode.(HV30 Canon Camera) I have tested the following:HDV from HVR1500 into Adrenaline(for offline) OMF to DS…DS would not read TC from HVR1500. Was able to live capture but that defeats offline)
HDV dubbed to HDCAM thru HDSDI & Fire wire…From the offline to the online the OMF that I output did not match up (the offline is a SD 23.98 off line…don’t ask.. and the online is a 1080 23.98 online) I’ve been told to get HDV to HDCAM asap as HDV’s TC sucks. Does you have any experience with this?? I’m using a HDW1800 to play the HDV transfer with. The clock is ticking and I wouyld really like a solution.
thanks

January 28, 2009 at 9:10 pmEarle,
You have a couple of issues going on. First it is my understanding that Avid does not support that 24p mode from Cannon. http://www.avid.com/resources/briefs/Canon_FactSheet.pdf. Second, taking it out of the HD-SDI out will only get you 1080i 59.94. So unless that 1800 deck can read the flags and output true 23.98 via HD-SDI, not sure about that model, you are out of luck. Have they already started the offline at 23.98? Another possible workflow is to cut at 29.97, Online at 1080i 59.94 then run it through a Terenax for the frame rate conversion. Not the prettiest but can get you there. How long is it? Another possible would be offline in Final Cut then Automatic duck it with media as an AAF and bring into the DS. I have not tried this last method myself but it should work.Good luck,
Erik Peterson
